History of “Victory in jesus”
“Victory in Jesus” was written in 1939 by Eugene M. Bartlett. Considered one of the founding fathers of Southern Gospel music, Bartlett taught the art of music to many, going on to found the Hartford Music Company in Hartford, Arkansas, where he composed and published hymns and taught singers to sight read.
At 54 years old, Bartlett suffered a stroke, which left him partially paralyzed and bedridden, unable to perform or travel. It was after this turn of events that Bartlett penned the words to “Victory in Jesus,” his final and most beloved hymn. He chose to push through the heartbreak of his circumstances, fix his eyes on Jesus, and celebrate the victory found in His Savior who conquered death and the grave; what remarkable faith!
Inspired by Bartlett’s story and the truth found in his lyrics, our Venture Worship team reimagined this timeless hymn, crafting an original arrangement for our church family. A new, additional verse speaks to the temporary sorrow felt by disciples following Jesus’ crucifixion – and the sudden excitement and victory when He stepped out of the grave, trampling death under his feet.
“Victory in Jesus” has a unique meaning for each person who encounters it in worship; for some, it evokes memories of those who have gone on before. For some, it takes them back to the early days of their faith, or even the moment they first believed. For some, it may even be the first they’ve heard of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf and the freedom possible through relationship with Him. What does “Victory in Jesus” mean for you?
